King of the Highland Pipers Review
King of the Highland Pipers
Long out of print, King of the Highland Pipers is only occasionally
available at a normal retail price, but if you do run across a reasonably
priced copy by all means seize the day. This disc rereleases two previous
Burgess recordings--1976's The Art Of The Highland Bagpipe and 1969's
King Of The Highland Pipers--on one double album. Highlights include two
piobaireachd tunes, The Birth of Rory
Mor Macleod and The Desperate Battle
of the Birds, and the lyricism and sensitivity of his playing are astounding.
This CD is 76 minutes of one of the best pipers in history at his very best,
and an all-time classic among Highland pipers in the know.
The Piping Centre 1996 Recital Series, Vol. 2 Review
The Piping Centre 1996 Recital Series, Vol. 2, with Donald MacPherson
The Piping Centre disc, still in active circulation, should prove far
easier to acquire. In 1996, the Piping Centre in Glasgow held a series
of recitals headlined by Scotland's brightest piping stars. Volume
2 is 64 minutes long, with 43 tunes on 14 medley tracks; the album
features not
only John Burgess, but also the legendary Donald MacPherson. Other
volumes in this same 1996 recital series are also well worth checking
out, such as
Volume
1 (featuring the piping of Alasdair
Gillies and Jack Lee) and Volume
4 (featuring the piping of Gordon Duncan and Angus MacColl).
